When we began this journey of parenting, we’d take our little guy out for a haircut. It was a fun little adventure, and the idea of doing it myself had never actually come to mind.
Fast-forward a couple years, and in an effort to reduce expenses, we chose to give chose to give haircutting thing a whirl. And oh boy, there was definitely a learning curve! Those first few cuts were terrible! But I kept trying. I’d watch tutorials, get a book from the library, ask other moms how they did it, and just try again. And again. And little by little, I started to figure out the basics a little better. I started to gain a bit more confidence. In many ways, that’s how parenting has evolved - adding new skills, or building on strengths in order to contribute to something greater than ourselves.
And here we are today, still giving at-home haircuts to all four kiddos. I’d still consider them a far cry from “professional” but for now, they get the job done.
Today, as they each pulled up their chair for “mom’s salon” (a name we came up with at some point along the way), I can’t help but feel my heart burst a little, as each one sits in the chair with their unique personality and talks away while I soak in this 1:1 time together. Some are more wiggly than others, but as our youngest popped up on the chair, I just smiled thinking our oldest was that size not too long ago.
1:1 time feels like a challenge when juggling the needs of four human beings, and it’s funny how something that started out for financial savings, has paid out in other ways time and time again.
We know times and seasons will evolve, and “mom’s salon” won’t last forever, but gosh, so grateful for the experience!
