Saturday was the 2007 Utah State Cyclocross Championships at Wheeler Farm. I've never understood why cycling State Championships take place in the middle of a series. Oh well, it must be some cycling nuance that I have yet to figure out yet. This whole past week I have been fighting a nasty cold so I was pretty skeptical about placing well at this race. Scott and Kelsey were still sick as well, so we weren't expecting too much from ourselves. Again, my plan was to start out fast and try to hold the lead if possible. If I could hold it, great. If not, at least I tried. The course was awesome. Each lap was over 2 miles long and was full of twisty single track and fast dirt road sections. On one of the barrier sections, I came in a little too hot and couldn't clip out. The result was a nasty road rash on my left leg. See the pic below. It's nasty! Timpanogos had a great crowd out to cheer us on. It's always nice to have people shouting words of encouragement while you are literally riding your guts out. The cheering must have helped because I held my lead and ended up taking the State Championship. I guess it feels pretty good, but I don't know if winning it actually means anything. Oh well, it was still fun!

you made me very proud.
Strong work champ. I have been looking for someone to score me some world championship stripes. Let me know when you are ready.
IT means you are the STATE Champion!!!
Sabrosa, I'll trade you the stripes for a frame and fork. Oh wait...I only ride carbon. Sorry, won't work.
no carpet for you!
Wow Mike, the mighty state champion - that's awesome! I wish there was a race for you to put the hammer down on the east coast when you come to visit in december - but that will be the same weekend as the national championship race in Kansas - which is why the calendar is left empty almost everywhere else.
